Announcement of Open call for submissions for the “Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival 2025”

Recruitment details

We are looking for art works and projects that utilize resources rooted in the region, such as Sado Island’s nature, history, culture, climate, and scenery (World Heritage Site: Sado Island Gold Mine, Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Site: Sado’s village-vicinity mountain Coexistence with Japanese Crested Ibises, Geopark and food, traditional performing arts and traditional architecture, Noh stage complex, etc.), and shed light on diverse values.


[RECRUITMENT DETAILS]
Artwork proposal
1. Instauration Art: Artworks or display to be displayed during the festival
2. Performing Art:  Music, dance, or theater play to be performed during the festival
3. Free Genre: Not limited to art, but peans/projects that encompass various fields (i.e. cooking, fashion, design, handicraft, technology etc.
Applicants can submit up to 3 proposes

SITE FOR ARTWORK / PROJECT
Across entire Sado City (i.e. Ryotsu area, Ogi area, Aikawa area)
(i.e. Shopping streets, beach, rice fields, forests, lakes (Lake Kamo), houses, shrines, roads, etc.)
*The specific locations for installation and activities will be determined by the secretariat according to the proposed plan.

DEADLINE
Submit the proposal between March 31(Monday) and April 30 (Wednesday), 2025. 23:59 Japan Standard Time (UTC+9)
*Hand delivery, email and post mail of the proposal will not be accepted.

MATERIALS TO SUBMIT

Please attach the following electronic data in one PDF file:
1.Artwork Proposal: Please include the following information:
・Proposal (title, image, concept, summary of the proposed project, size, materials, production method, schedule, budget)

2.Documents that will be useful for the plan, such as resume and examples of reference artwork
・Portfolio (includes past works / projects)

※ The image should help articulate your project. Please use a drawing, model, photo and/or diagram as seen appropriate.

※ Concept and summary of the proposed project should be clear and brief, either in Japanese
or English and within 400 characters or 200 words respectively)

※Attach the completion of bank transfer page if paying via net banking
※Attach the notification of payment email if paying via credit card

[SELECTED PROJECTS / BUDGET]
Approximately 5-10 works of art will be selected (subject to change depending on the situation) Selected project will be financially supported up to JPY 500,000.
※ The actual amount of support will be decided based upon the proposed estimate.
※ The work production and installation costs include all costs required for production, such as transportation and accommodation costs.
※ The final handling of profitable works will be decided in consultation with the executive committee.
※ Some parts of the venue are designated as Special Zones of a World Heritage Site or as Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. Due to landscape conservation regulations and the Natural Parks Act, you may be asked to modify the proposed location or details of your artwork plan.

*The name of the credit card holder should be the same as the applicant.

*The name on the card and the applicant’s name must be the same.

[LOCATION SCOUTING TOUR]
There will be a tour to scout potential sites for artwork / projects. The location scouting tour is scheduled for around April 20, 2025.   *Reservation necessary to participate in the tour. Details will be announced on the official website in due course. *You may send a proposal without participating in the scouting tour. Participation in the tour has no effect on the selection process.


ABOUT VARIOUS PROJECT RIGHTS

Various rights (such as ownership and intellectual property rights) belong to the applicant. Organizer office will have the right to use any images of the project and text written in the proposal free of charge in publications, such as those to a catalogue, website, press coverage and other related media.
