Currently on view at the Ryotsu Folk Museum is a special exhibition featuring “Oni of Sado” painted by Japanese-style painter Koujin Toneyama.
In Sado, oni are believed to ward off misfortune and bring good fortune. They appear widely in local performing arts such as Oni-daiko (Demon Drum performances) and have long been familiar, beloved figures in everyday life.
Through Toneyama’s works, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to discover the lesser-known roles and unique魅力 of oni passed down in Sado’s culture.
We invite you to experience the presence of oni hidden within these stories at the venue.
