Discover NOH — A Performance and Workshop on a Long-Dormant Stage

Hosho School "Gakuyo Yubu no Kai"

This is a truly unique event on Sado Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can witness a live Noh performance and participate in an unparalleled workshop taught by local masters.

Sado Island is home to an incredible one-third of Japan's remaining Noh stages. We invite you to the Nagae Atsukusihiko Shrine Noh Stage, which has been dormant for about 100 years, with performances ceasing since the Taisho era (1912-1926). Now, a new era begins as we revive this historic stage with a stunning performance by local Noh masters "Rakuyo Yubu no Kai"
Iwai Tadao | Hosho School Master / Head of Rakuyo Yubu no Kai. Residing in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. He founded the "Rakuyo Yubu no Kai" in 2008 and currently trains approximately 20 students on Sado. The group not only devotes itself to practicing chanting and dancing, but also holds an annual recital, providing an opportunity to showcase their accomplishments. They also actively participate in Noh events, such as takigi Noh, held on the island, fostering community-based activities. Believing that Noh is not merely a traditional performing art but also a mirror that reflects the human heart, Iwai is committed to passing on the art and spiritual richness to the next generation.

This is more than just a show-—it's an exclusive opportunity to connect with this ancient art form. You'll not only watch the performance but also get a special hands-on experience through our workshop.

Before or after the event, be sure to visit the main hall, where you can see beautiful Noh masks and costumes on display.
