The Thing Inside the Belly

Tatsuhiro Kurahuji (Japan)

As an artist, I also serve as a brand director for everyday items. Creating demand for products worthy of being "chosen" by people is what I do for a living. I think of a brand as a "feel-good memory." It is the emotion behind our everyday choices, a subtle form of dependency. As a contemporary artist, I am trying to create works that confront these "feel-good memories," evoke them, and allow people to re-experience them. This work was inspired by the gold mines of Sado Island. It was a place where people split the mountains in search of gold -- a place where such extraordinary desire existed. From there, I imagined an old tale -- a story that is funny, somewhat disturbing, but also endearing. I hope you enjoy it.
