Passing through the gold mine

XIN QI (Fake Fire Atelier) - Taiwan

“The interiors of caves around the world all look alike.
Art binds them, becoming a path of the heart.” ̶    Xin Qi

Sado Island holds unique scenery; its gold-mining past echoes Taiwan’s Jiufen. Inside the caves, the landscapes look alike,
inspiring artist Xin Qi: the depths resemble tunnels through space, binding people with “unseen memories.” This is the origin of "Passing through the gold mine".

The work transforms the room into a “vein passage.” Two cave entrances connect Japan and Taiwan̶once golden sites, now glowing with human warmth. On the floor lie “sealed memories.”
Through dialogue with residents, Xin Qi gathers stories and guides the making of fluorescent collages, affixed as patterns.

Gold was mined, carried away; what remains is not ore but people. "Passing through the gold mine" is a journey across geography, history, and the subconscious. Memory becomes a road to anywhere, to anyone, to shared futures. The cave is not mere space but passage, echo, and unseen bond. Xin Qi responds to deep perception and collective desire, letting light buried in darkness shine again.
