10.- katachibito –
Hirofumi Kera × Yuriko Takagi(Japan)
Sado-born Hirofumi Kera, a leading hair and makeup artist with Shiseido, and world-class photographer Yuriko Takagi have created a captivating exhibition of portraits that capture the unique daily lives of the people living in Sado through hair, makeup, and photography. The title "katachibito" is an old word meaning "beautiful person," but we believe that "beauty" encompasses not just outward appearance but also the inner qualities of a person. “Kesho,” the Japanese word for “makeup,” comes from the word “kewai,” which is synonymous with "kehai" (presence), suggesting that beauty can be sensed from the invisible aura and demeanor that a person exudes. Moreover, makeup can be seen as a "connection to society." Expressing a person's character through makeup and hairstyle can boost their confidence and encourage them to take a step forward. The power of hair and makeup lies in their ability to bring out the inner radiance hidden within a person. For this project I have teamed up with photographer Yuriko Takagi, who has captured many fashion portraits and portraits of people around the world, focusing on the "human presence" from her unique perspective. As a hair and makeup artist from Sado, I aim to bring out the true charm of the people living on the island through the power of hair, makeup, and photography, and create artworks that immortalize the beautiful way in which they live life. It is with heartfelt appreciation that we dedicate "katachibito."
