08.Bodies of Water – The Sea of Japan

Jiaying Wu(China/Germany)

In my artistic work, I interact with my surroundings on site - with people, nature and the elements. I travel a lot and take this approach with me to the different places where I work. Waters are the focus of my work. When we talk about the origin of life, natural resources, the development of human civilization, diplomatic relations and national borders, water plays an important role in it. Water carries time and history. My works are site-specific free-flow ink painting. I work directly on site at different boundary waters, rivers and streams. I deliberately refrain from using a brush and do not interfere with the work. The ever-changing flowing water carries ink and brings the constant change of nature and human life to rice paper. Giving up control over the single line is a symbol of renunciation of manipulation, power and control in dealing with nature, a symbol of overcoming interpersonal and national boundaries. The interaction of me, my strength and thoughts, with the movement of the water determine my work of art: water with ink, colors on paper, image and memory, viewer and creator. Everything comes together. My work contains a short moment and at the same time eternity, it shows movement and stillness. It presents every body of water as a contemporary witness that has its own character and tells its own story.
