07.Iron Stacking: Build Your Way

Wu Chien-Hsing(Taiwan)

"Iron Stacking: Build Your Way" is an artwork inspired by the automotive repair industry. Using deconstructed car parts, particularly car hoods, it explores themes of automobile manufacturing, consumerism, and labor. The distinctive shapes of the car hoods reflect the era of modernization and consumer culture. The piece also highlights the use of contemporary industrial materials, bringing new life to these elements. Displayed at the Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival, the artwork invites visitors to participate in iron stacking, inspired by Japanese folklore about stone stacking. This interactive activity connects with the island's history as a bustling port, symbolizing the hard work of industrial laborers and the area’s cultural prosperity. The ever-changing stacking forms reflect the evolving process and environment, blending modern design with historical remembrance, and representing the island’s evolving history and diverse future possibilities.

Wu Chien-Hsing

Wu Chien-Hsing (b. 1987) was born in Puli, Nantou County, Taiwan. Wu received his BFA from Chinese Culture University in 2011 and his MFA from National Taipei University in 2017. His work spans multiple artistic mediums, including painting, mixed media, installation, video, sculpture, and performance art. Wu often utilizes everyday objects in his work, stimulating discussion around their external form and internal energy as well as their potential for transformation and preservation. His early works dialogue with the concept of “home,” constructed interpersonal networks, and value systems, taking these as his main points of creative departure. Through means of artistic expression, Wu singles out parallels between the transformation of Taiwan’s industrial landscape and the course of his own life, over which he watched his family’s business deteriorate with the decline of traditional industry. Through his work, the artist seeks to find a new voice for these withering industries, increasing their visibility. Simultaneously, the artist reinserts his aforementioned personal experiences and the history of industry in Taiwan back into a larger narrative of Taiwan’s transformation under modernization: from agriculture and its processing to the electronics industry to family factories and the relocation of production. In recent years, the artist has used his own body as a creative medium, as he places himself in different urban spaces and lends his form as a means to stitch together different cultures.
