Walking Through Minatomachi Ryotsu

The Minato district, located around Ryotsu Port, serves as Sado’s maritime gateway and is an area where countless stories have unfolded. Here, you can immerse yourself in the unique culture of a port town, experiencing its rich fishing history and the lively atmosphere that once characterized the lives of sailors. While this area is often recognized for being the birthplace of Kita Ikki, it also holds a fascinating, lesser-known history related to past modes of transportation. We’ll explore the tools that were actually used and their present-day forms, also visiting the spiritual centers that supported the local community.

Our guide for this special walk is Professor Tetsuo Ikeda, an Emeritus Professor at Niigata University and a distinguished folklorist who has dedicated many years to passionate research on Sado. With Professor Ikeda’s unique insights and extensive knowledge, we’ll unravel the hidden stories and charms within Sado’s townscape.
