Walking Through Minatomachi Ryotsu

Ebisu district, close to Ryotsu Port, the gateway to Sado, was once a thriving hub of trade. The area still retains the atmosphere of its bustling past, including entertainment districts that evoke the charm of the Showa era. What’s lesser known is that Kunio Yanagita, one of Japan’s most prominent folklorists, visited this very area. On this tour, we’ll delve into the present landscape while pausing at the few remaining traces of what the streets would have looked like when he visited in the mid-Taisho period.

Our guide for this special walk is Professor Tetsuo Ikeda, Emeritus Professor at Niigata University and a distinguished folklorist who has dedicated many years to passionate research on Sado. With Professor Ikeda’s unique insights and extensive knowledge, we’ll unravel the hidden stories and charms within Sado’s townscape.
