The Tsuneichi Miyamoto Photography Project is an ongoing effort launched in 2016 by the Life Culture Research Forum Sado (the project was on hiatus in 2020). Kodai Konishi (Tokyo Gakugei University), Takehisa Kadota (Rikkyo University), and Kiyoshi Sugimoto (Tokai University), lead a team comprised of researchers and students, including students outside of the aforementioned institutions.

Tsuneichi Miyamoto: A Photographic Walk Through the Mining Town of Aikawa

Ethnologist Tsuneichi Miyamoto (1907-1981) traveled around Japan and took as many as 100,000 photographs of what caught his eye. He visited Sado numerous times between the late 1950s and the year before his death, during which he took about 4,000 photographs. This exhibition invites the viewer into the world of the old mining town of Aikawa, integrating Miya-moto’s photos into a survey conducted by students who roamed the area with Miyamoto’s work as their guide.
